The oil industry on the West Coast of Canada is likely to take a hit once US President-Elect Joe Biden comes into office.

While he was in office, Donald Trump was a big supporter of the oil industry and non-renewable energy. This support affected the Canadian oil industry. Donald Trump signed the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline which goes through the United States and Canada.

Canada is also the fifth-largest oil producer in the world. During his campaign, Biden discussed decreasing the oil industry and in the second presidential debate said “I would transition from the oil industry.”

Although the oil industry may be negatively affected due to Biden, the President-Elect is also going to greatly improve America’s relationship with Canada.

Gabriel Weekes, a Ryerson University graduate and current public and administration TA says “It’s always easier to interact with foreign partners who have consistent policy plans whether or not you agree with them if you know what to expect from them.”

What comes next

A Ryerson politics professor, Rob Goodman has a similar stance on the new president but says we should prepare for the future.

“It’s a brief sigh of relief but also take this time to reassess and build stronger links with other countries so that Canada can play a more independent role.”

Florida college student Kristeen Lee is trying to stay hopeful but is bracing for the impact of such a divided country. “It’s quiet at the moment in most areas but I feel like the closer it gets the more of a chance of any kind of violent thing happening gets closer.”
