How veganism is becoming more accessible to students

With sustainability and health becoming two of the most popular topics of the day, more and more people are turning to veganism. But with many students out of work because of the COVID-19 pandemic, is being a vegan financially viable for students?

Sean Dollinger tells us about how he’s helping make veganism more accessible, and Cynthia Haris tells us about how veganism fits into her life. (Poline Nasri/JRN 270/71)

Sean Dollinger, founder of PlantX says that his website is designed to help people find quality groceries that can be delivered to their door. The site offers a range of groceries and price ranges to help fit any budget, even students’. 

“Our main goal at PlantX was to create an environment that people feel welcomed in and that they have the ability to order anything and they could rest assured that it is plant-based,” said Dollinger.

Cynthia Harris is a York University student who says that being vegan can be as inexpensive as you need it to be. She says that buying vegan groceries doesn’t cost any more than her parents’ not vegan groceries. Haris says that replacing meat with alternatives like refried beans is filling, and even more cost-effective than meat. 

“Instead of yeast, I would get this thing called nutritional yeast. Instead of butter I would get vegan butter,” said Haris.

While veganism can seem like its price tag is too intimidating, veganism is more accessible than ever.
